Back when ProTouch operated as a car wash and detailing center in Ottery (from 2006 to early 2015), we had the opportunity to restore a Mercedes-Benz W202 C-Class through our paint correction and detailing services. At the time, we were based at the old Total Garage (now a Shell garage) behind Ottery Pick n Pay and Halfway Toyota. Today, we operate from Lansdowne, Cape Town, focusing expert polishing and detailing solutions as well as paint repair.

What is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is a specialized polishing and detailing process designed to remove scratches, swirl marks, and other surface defects from your vehicle’s clear coat. It significantly improves the paint’s clarity and gloss, restoring a showroom-like finish.

Who Can Benefit from Paint Correction?

Paint correction is ideal for: ✔ Vehicles with surface-level paint defects (scratches, swirl marks, oxidation) that haven’t penetrated deeper than the clear coat ✔ Those seeking a high-level correction, with improvements ranging from 85% to 95%+ in overall paint condition

Important Limitations to Consider

While paint correction is highly effective, it cannot:

✖ Fix damage that can be felt with a fingernail

✖ Repair areas where base colour, primer, metal, or plastic is exposed

✖ Correct clear coat peeling, sunburn, or fading

For damage beyond correction, paint repair services would be the best solution, which we also provide.

The Paint Correction Process

Our comprehensive paint correction process is a meticulous multi-step journey to restore your vehicle’s paint to its optimal condition. Here’s how we achieve outstanding results:

  1. Preparation Phase
    • First, we perform a presoak using a snowfoam and then a hand wash with either the car shampoo diluted into a bucket or applied as a foam, using grit guard equipped buckets for passive dirt filtration and microfiber wash mitts. This is followed by a detailed paint decontamination process using professional-grade clay bars and iron removers to eliminate embedded contaminants and industrial fallout.
  2. Assessment Phase
    • We conduct an extensive paint inspection using both natural sunlight and professional LED detailing lights in our state-of-the-art studio.
    • This dual lighting approach allows us to identify every imperfection, from minor swirl marks to deeper scratches and oxidation.
    • This is to create a customised correction plan for your vehicle.
    • We document these findings by photos and video which is shared with you
  3. Correction Phase
    • The process begins with spot-treating severe defects through careful wet sanding or targeted heavy polishing, depending on the paint condition.
    • We then perform a test spot to determine the optimal polishing combination – including pad type, compound selection, and machine speed – that will deliver the best results for your specific paint type and condition.
  4. Final Polishing
    • Once we’ve determined the perfect polishing strategy, we methodically work through the entire vehicle using our proven multi-stage polishing technique.
    • This approach ensures we achieve maximum gloss and clarity while maintaining the integrity of your vehicle’s paint.

Case Study: Mercedes-Benz W202 C-Class Paint Correction

Since this vehicle had black paint, defects were highly visible, especially under direct sunlight. We identified random isolated deep scratches (RIDS) along with deep-set swirl marks across the entire body. To correct these issues, we performed a two-step correction process:

1️⃣ Compounding Stage – A heavy-cut compound was used to remove deep swirls and scratches 2️⃣ Polishing Stage – A finer polish refined the finish, enhancing depth and clarity

What Causes Deep Swirls? Deep swirl marks often result from poor washing techniques or leaving dirt on the car for extended periods before cleaning. Over time, this leads to abrasive damage on the paint surface.

Final Protection

To preserve the corrected paint, we applied Meguiar’s Ultimate Paste Wax by hand, ensuring a protective and glossy finish.

Before & After Photos

These photos were taken back in 2015 using a smartphone and with less detailing photography experience than I have today—so please excuse the composition and lighting! However, the transformation speaks for itself.
