What is PDR?
Paintless Dent Repair, abbreviated as PDR, is the removal of dents from metal bodywork that have no paint damage within the dent without the need to respray, maintaining originality and the need for time-consuming paint repairs.
In general, a dent is reduced to either zero or to an unnoticeable size at a closer-than-normal viewing range (the normal viewing range is 1.5m in direct sunlight)
The methods used are either push (This is the best and most precise from behind the dented panel with special rods, etc) or pull (glue or electromagnetism. Suction isn’t technically viable for most dents)
How dent removal is priced.
For a precise quotation its best the PDR technician see’s your vehicle in person.
If this is not be possible or convenient, so we will give an estimate over whatsapp based on photos. An estimate however could be very wrong based on photography as something may have been hard to see in the photo
The following is some of the criteria that is used to assess a dent.
1. Shape and size of the dent
- Even a ‘small dent’ causes the surrounding metal to pull and stretch, creating tension in the body work. This means that the work area is not just that “small dented area” that you see, its further out.
- The complexity of the repair increases as the size and shape of the dent grow, particularly if the dent is in a hard-to-reach area.
- In this regard, the more pronounced or severe the dent, the more it pushes the metal inward, the tension must be relieved in order to restore the surface to a flat appearance that may not be noticeable to the naked eye.
PDR Mercedes-Benz CLE
This dent, on a Mercedes Benz rear wheel arch or fender, appears to be relatively small, but it requires access from the inner wheel arch in order to push it out. On some cars we may have to jack it up and remove the wheel arch liner for proper access. Further, it’s right on a bodyline, which tensions the metal and can “lock” the dent.

2. Location of dent on the panel
- To access and repair a dent, it may be necessary to manoeuvre around or even remove structures such as impact bars, locks, glass, mechanisms, trims, and the like.
- Stripping/removing these parts take time and increases pricing
3. Aluminium versus Steel
- Different metals react differently when doing PDR.
- Aluminium is the more difficult and of course thin steel
4. Paint Thickness and age
- The thickness of your paint and its age plays a big role in how much “flex” there is to it and how much it can be worked.
- PDR employs pushing and pulling methods to work the dent out. I’m above that, the body and paint would’ve moved and stretched when it was dented.
- The most important thing to keep in mind is that dents stretches and tensions the metal from around itself further than what you think. Small doesn’t mean necessarily quick or low cost. When comparing PDR service and pricing, experience is king.
