Beyond Interior Valet and Deep Cleaning: When Your Car Needs Specialised Interior Cleaning
When it comes to keeping your car’s interior pristine, a full valet or even a deep clean often does the trick. But what happens when faced with accidental spills and mess? That’s where special interior cleaning comes in.
At ProTouch Car Care in Cape Town, we’ve honed our skills over 19 years, tackling everything from baboon break-ins to flood-damaged vehicles. This experience has allowed us to develop a specialised approach to interior cleaning that goes above and beyond the standard valet or deep clean.
What Makes Interior Cleaning “Special”?
Special interior cleaning focuses on those hard-to-tackle messes that require extra attention and expertise. Think:
- Biohazards: Blood, bodily fluids, and other organic matter that require careful handling for your safety and health.
- Hazardous Materials: Spills involving chemicals, paints, solvents, or even fine powders like printer toner.
- Stubborn Spills: Liquids like milk or juice that seep into crevices, leaving behind lingering odors and potential mold growth.
- Lingering Odors: Smoke, mold, or persistent smells from spills that standard cleaning can’t eliminate.
These situations demand a specialized approach, not just a quick wipe-down.
Why Standard Services Aren’t Enough
While a standard valet or even a deep clean might seem sufficient, they often fall short when dealing with serious interior issues. Here’s why:
- Surface-Level Cleaning: Many services focus on what’s visible, potentially missing contaminants that have seeped into carpets, upholstery, or even under floor mats. This can lead to lingering odors, mold growth, and even health hazards.
- Lack of Expertise: Standard cleaning services may not have the training, equipment, or cleaning agents to safely and effectively deal with biohazards or hazardous materials. Improper handling of these substances can put you and your passengers at risk.
- Risk of Further Damage: Using excessive water or incorrect cleaning methods can actually worsen the problem, pushing contaminants deeper into your car’s interior.
(Consider adding a citation here about the ineffectiveness of standard cleaning methods for certain contaminants, perhaps from a source like the Environmental Working Group.)
The ProTouch Special Cleaning Process
At ProTouch, we take a meticulous approach to special interior cleaning, ensuring your car is not only clean but also safe. Here’s how it works:
- Initial Inspection: We begin with a thorough inspection to assess the extent of the damage. This can be done in person or remotely through detailed high definition and quality photos together with a detailed consultation.
- Consultation: Based on the inspection, we’ll discuss the best cleaning approach, including the level of cleaning required, any necessary disassembly, potential risks, and a clear cost breakdown.
- Booking and Deposit: Once you’ve chosen a service, we’ll schedule an appointment and require a R250 booking deposit, which is deducted from the final invoice. For the deposit that would likely be via EFT with the final payment payable by Cash, EFT or Card. We bank with FNB so we accept Geopayments as well.
- Work in Progress: We believe in transparency. We’ll keep you updated throughout the cleaning process with photos and videos, highlighting any issues or interesting discoveries along the way.
- Safe Cleaning Process: We use high-quality, environmentally friendly, and PFAS-free cleaning products. We also utilize steam cleaning for effective and safe sanitation. Our team wears appropriate protective equipment when handling hazardous materials to ensure everyone’s safety.
- Hand-over: When your car is ready, we’ll walk you through the work completed, pointing out anything noteworthy we found during the cleaning.
- Aftercare: We’ll provide any relevant guidance on aftercare as per the situation. In general we recommend airing out your car for a few days to prevent any lingering moisture developing into musty smell or even mould growth.
Real-World Results
Recently, a client who owns a pizza shop brought in their car after tomato sauce was spilled in the boot.
What may seem like a simple spill just in the boot area, it had seeped down into the wheel well and ran under the back seat.
We cut the boot mat out as with these models of Volkswagen Polo the mat is attached underneath the back seat and we deep cleaned the affected areas with the appropriate cleaning products, hot steam and extraction.
Had the client opted for a basic cleaning service just what could be seen in the boot area, with a normal shampoo and maybe extraction, the hidden sauce would have led to unpleasant odours and potential mould growth.
When to Choose Special Interior Cleaning
Here are some common scenarios where special interior cleaning is necessary:
- Accidents: Cleaning up human or animal bodily fluids requires specialised procedures to ensure staff safety and hygiene.
- Spills: Coffee, milk, juice, pet accidents, and other spills can leave behind stubborn stains and create persistent odours.
- Hazardous Materials: Spills involving paint, chemicals, or industrial substances need careful cleaning and handling as well as disposal.
If you have persistent smoke odours from cigarettes, cigars, weed, marijuana, etc we offer an Odour Removal package – to learn more about that visit our interior deep cleaning page.
Addressing these issues promptly protects your car’s value, ensures a healthy environment for you and your passengers, and prevents long-term damage.
What You Can Do at Home or DIY
For minor spills and stains, there are some DIY cleaning methods you can try.
In general;
- If you have a wet and dry vacuum, its leagues better than blotting, dont forget to remove the dry filter and clean the vacuum afterwards!
- If you have to Blot up spillage dont rub! You are pushing it further in!
- Use old bath towels that you dont worry about getting stained
- Dont use paper towels it will crumble and your soul will too!
- Bicarbonate of soda does help to absorb smell but it requires to be applied directly to the stinky area which in most cases in cars is wet issues and it will clump up making it crappy to clean up.
- For organic spills e.g. milk or mould you can use a 1:1 ratio of white spirit vinegar and cold water (never hot!)
- For non organic spills you can use a few drops of dishwashing liquid in warm not hot water. Use microfiber towels and a rinse bucket with plain water.
Remember that quick action will save you tons in the future!
Dealing with Pests
We do not service vehicles infested with animals or insects. These situations require the expertise of licensed pest control professionals who have the proper experience, certifications, products and tools to safely address the problem.
